Goldfish Party

The party table laden with goldfish themed treats

For Aiden’s 7th Birthday Party he chose a goldfish theme for his celebration. As a serious goldfish lover we took inspiration from our own fancy breed style goldfish when designing the party. Tones of yellow gold, orange, black and pearlescent white are therefore quite prominent against the backdrop of blues and greens reflecting the water and pondside reeds.

The pebble shaped invitation for Aiden’s party was printed on a shimmery metallic paper stock.

I designed the invitations which were printed on a gold lustre paperstock and cut to a pebble shape to evoke the natural organic forms of a goldfish pond.

I had handmade a watercolour cake toppper for Aiden but we decided to nestle this amidst the flower arrangements instead so as not to detract from the delicate goldfish details on top of the cake.

The piñata lovingly created to imitate Aiden’s favourite pet goldfish

Aiden’s favourite pet goldfish, sushi, is a red-capped oranda who was captured perfectly by the talented Karen in the pinãta that was a key highlight of the party.

The other main party game played was one I designed using the illustrations created for the backdrop where the kids had to toss a ring to “fish” out a goldfish from the pond and collect points with each one given a score based on it’s rarity. This game was great fun for the kids and super easy to teach and play in a party setting. It’s also available to download now as a printable party game if you’re inspired to play too. https://elkprints.com/products/goldfish-pebble-game

To create the main backdrop layers of streamers in shades of blue and pearlescent were hung to create a shimmery ground for the watercolour painted goldfish to swim against.

Catherine from Ivy Trail Events created a beautiful set of floral arrangments of pond-inspired botanicals with ‘goldfish’ calla lilies.

For the main birthday cake we made a jelly pond cake which was an interesting baking challenge to accomplish. A regular butter cake was covered in a white chocolate ganache layer before pouring a layer of jelly above it.

Our DIY baking also extended to creating cupcakes decorated with sugar fondant fish painted with edible food paints from Miss Biscuit and Sweet Sticks.

I also made goldfish shaped gingerbread cookies and decorated them with the edible food paints to resemble goldfish.

For the dessert table and thank you bags we also had fun finding special treats like goldfish crackers, Swedish goldfish gummy lollies and Japanese red-bean waffle carp cakes.

Cookies from Cookie Queen Kitsch’n were a final beautiful addition to the table that were also a special treat for guests to take home with them as they were printed with same, but edible, artwork used on the invitations.

Savoury treats included a sushi platter (with plenty of soy sauce fish bottles), sandwiches cut into goldfish shapes, guacamole “ponds” with cherry tomato “goldfish” tartlets, ocean trout tarts and seafood noodle boxes.
